Math Kit

TactoNum

A number you build with your hands.

Tactile number pad

What it is

A tablet of PET felt with six round disc slots and Braille alignment. Discs lift out and press back in, so a child builds a number with their hands rather than reading one.

The TactoNum pad: a green felt tablet with six round wells holding removable orange discs, beside a blue base board.

Step by step

How it’s used

  1. Let the child feel the base tablet and find its six disc spaces.
  2. Practise taking each felt disc out and putting it back.
  3. Call out a number and ask the child to form it with the right count of discs.
  4. Match each number to its Braille notation, saying it aloud.
  5. Set simple problems — 2 + 3 — and solve them by touch.
  6. Play: “remove four discs”, “place two on the top row”.
